The July Wedding and Travel and Casino Meltdown Report
The current travel and casino industry have taken a heavy hit due to the ongoing credit crisis. Massive credit downfalls have sent many companies and institutions into scramble trying to find a solution. One solution that is being considered by the big players is the sale of their credit default risk. Banks and other institutions that issue credit are in need of short-term financing because of their inability to meet demand from consumers. This supply of funds gives banks the upper hand when considering sale of their lines of credit as credit conditions continue to deteriorate.

The travel and casino sector in Las Vegas is seeing higher than normal sales decreases in the early part of the year primarily due to higher than normal vacation spending and a slowdown in new business. Consumer spending also dropped slightly in July, following a three-month holiday season that included record high holiday shopping costs. While holiday shopping was a positive for overall revenue, it resulted in fewer transactions and consequently lower profit margins for the business. This downward trend is expected to continue as the end of the holiday season nears.
Last month’s monthly report from the Gaming Industry Association showed that the average daily income generated by gamblers in Nevada dropped 4% year over year, to an all time low. The increase in sales was more than offset by a decline in projected casino gambling winnings, which edged out initial increases from high rollers. Las Vegas has been slow to add new casinos to the mix as it continues to compete with other cities for lucrative real estate tax incentives. The lack of new gambling locations has caused vacancy to mount in many of the casino and resort hotels that are on the market. Many of these units will likely not be able to take on additional capacity despite any increase in available to rent.
